Mishari AlNajjar was comisioned by AlMakan to create posters as tribute to his experience as an artist inalmakan or as a reaction to the current street culture in the form of a visual language. His contribution “First Them, Now This” is a reaction to the coffee scene in Mubarak Al Kabeer street is the number one catalyst for a budding street art community, be it from informal installations of empty coffee cups perched on a window sills, stickers, or posters promoting the next hot spot in the city. A distinct duality exists in the street, from the glitzy coffee bars and endless lines of coffee enthusiasts to the almost grunge-like back of the street. The posters are meant to depict the back side of the street, with delivery trucks lining the street and a reflection of the coffee invasion happening in the city in the form of coffee byproducts suspended above the street.
